I'm 30 years old today.

I used to have a crush on Miriam Hopkins, but after seeing her in William Wyler's Carrie I don't think I could ever look at her the same way again. Her character is so infuriating I was on the verge of tear because I wanted to beat the crap out of her. The movie was totally manipulative and melodramatic, but I fell for it. It's been a long time since a movie got such an emotional response out of me.

I've been watching a lot of movies as I organize the house. The Nutty Professor with Jerry Lewis was a big disappointment. It's just stupid. Zardoz was super weird (so, of course, I liked it). The remake of The Lodger was intriguing. Mother, Jugs & Speed was fun (you get to see Bill Cosby drink and drive, get massaged by vibrators and beat up Larry Hagman). The Good Fairy was a hilarious early Preston Sturges penned comedy directed by William Wyler. It was good, but I think Sturges directing it would have made it great. Howl's Moving Castle was beautiful, but not as touching as Spirited Away. The Man in the White Suit was funny and intelligent.

I picked up my Nord Electro 2 today from the music store. It's awesome!
I also hung out with Doug, and we watched two episodes of 30 Days, which were interesting but also a little annoying. Oh yeah, Doug caught a tree on fire in my front yard.

Somer and I took a trip up to the Metroplex over the weekend. We stayed at her sister's and hung out with Scout who's now running around and getting into stuff. Savannah and Shanie were visiting Michigan, so it was just Somer, Jamie, Scout and me.
Friday night I watched The Ringer. I had wanted to see it because the Special Olympics endorsed it, so I was fairly confident that it would not be making fun of people with developmental delays (and it didn't). It was great seeing real Special Olympic athletes in supporting roles and being funny. In fact, one of the antagonists had mental retardation and what made him the bad guy was not his disability but his arrogance. Unfortunately, almost all the acting by the "professional" actors was abysmal and the writing and directing was clunky and cheesy. I would love to see this movie remade with a darker sensibility by a director with a sense of style.

I met up with Ms. F this morning and talked about what I think the life skills program will look like this coming school year. She's becoming the special ed. department chair full-time and a new teacher is stepping into her place (a teacher with lots of SpEd experience, but not in life skills), so it's going to be up to me to set the agenda for this year. My two major goals are to get the students out into the community and to publish creative works (poetry, music, stories, paintings, etc.).
I spent the rest of the afternoon writing lead sheets for my Evildoers songs, so our potential bass player, Angus, would have something to follow while we ran through our unrecorded material. At the rehearsal, things went as well as can be expected. Angus is a quick study and has a really positive attitude, but it's hard when you had songs worked up and sounding awesome to then hear them back at an embryonic state again. And I'm part of the setback, too, since I'm still trying to figure out keyboard parts to many of the songs and am struggling. Anyway, we're hoping to set up some gigs in August, so stay tuned.
07/05/2006:
Things that have happened since January:
1. One of my students passed away.
2. Somer graduated from school and moved back to Austin.
3. My students made a cool CD.
4. The Evildoers' EP finally came out, and then Renee quit the band.
5. "Lovebird" got played on 101X twice.
6. Somer and I moved into a house.
7. I bought two new keyboards.
8. The Evildoers may have found a new bass player.
I'm sure I'm leaving a bunch of stuff out, but this is a good start.
