Andy, Somer and I did have a pretty good Quetalby session Friday night. I haven’t listened to the tape yet, but it seemed to flow pretty well. There was some good playing by Somer and me and Andy was singing some funny stuff, which is what usually works best. It’s hard to tell, though, because there have been sessions in the past where I thought we sucked horribly, but it sounded really clever when we played it back. Other times (like this session) where it went well, but was excruciatingly boring when played back.
Late Saturday night, Somer and I watched Dancer in the Dark. It was amazing. I’m pretty critical of movies, but I didn’t find much to complain about in this movie. I also rented a Young Ones video. I think the episode titles were “Demolition”, “Bomb” and “Sick.” It’s a weird show. It’s kind of bad, but somehow enjoyable, too. Maybe it’s just the nostalgic feelings it conjures. I distinctly remember watching that show on MTV when I was just a kid. It must have given me brain damage.
On Sunday, Somer and I went to an office get-together at a co-worker’s farmhouse. Somer had fun while I got sunburned and had allergy attacks. I should get a spacesuit.

Andy B. came into town last night. He got in kind of late (for me at least), so we really didn’t do much, except go to ABCD’s. I actually found seven good used CDs, which hasn’t happened in awhile. When we got home, we spent the rest of the evening watching a Blur video Andy had brought. Hopefully tonight we’ll have a good Quetalby session.

Things have been hectic lately. Last Friday Somer and I went to see Built to Spill here in Austin at the Texas Union Ballroom. It was a great show, but it was fucking LOUD! I forgot to wear earplugs and that was a mistake, ‘cause my ears were hurting before the night was through. Also there were a few bad apples that were pushing through the crowd all night and pissing people off. At one moment I thought a fight might break out, but luckily the people chilled out and moved on. It was a long night (we got there at 9PM and watched three opening bands that rated from interesting to booooooring—BtS didn’t go on until around midnight).
On Saturday, Somer and I booked it to Denton, Texas in order to see BtS play again—this time at Fry Street Fair. We ended up leaving pretty late (around 1PM), but that was ok, ‘cause BtS didn’t play until 6:15 or so we thought. It turned out that BtS was rescheduled to play around 4:15 and we made it just in time to see their first song. They played the exact same set, but the sound was a little better and the solos were a little more inventive. After they finished Somer and I walked around a little bit in order to check out the fair. I thought it was dirty and hot and I’m not very comfortable being around a bunch of drunk strangers; Somer liked it.
Even though Somer and I both have family in the D/FW area, we decided to play it safe and get a hotel room in Denton, so we could go out to the Denton bars with my friends and not worry about trying to drive to Arlington in the middle of the night. Our plans fell through, so we ended up driving to Somer’s sister’s place and hanging out for a while and then driving back to Denton, so the hotel room wouldn’t be wasted.
On Sunday we slept in late, checked out and then drove to my dad’s place. He and his wife took us out to a late breakfast. Then we went back to Somer’s sister’s and I watched Scary Movie (which sucked). Then we went to Somer’s Aunt’s and played with her daughter’s baby, Angel. She’s a cute kid.
Anyhoo, we finally left for Austin around 6PM, but got stuck behind a wreck that held us up for THREE hours. We didn’t get back to Austin until midnight.
Monday morning I woke up late and had to change a flat tire on my car...in the rain! Tuesday morning I was confronted with another flat tire, so now my car is out of commission until I get a new tire. Hey, that’s the price I’ve got to pay for polluting the air with carbon monoxide.
Also, work’s been a madhouse. Lots of crazy shit going on that I don’t feel like going into. Nothing too bad, I’m still living the good life.

Yesterday I spent my entire workday in a team meeting learning how to communicate with my co-workers. It was kind of silly, but it was also a nice break from my normal routine.
I’ve been listening to an awesome compilation CD, Pop American Style. It was put out by March Records and collects a bunch of twee/lo-fi/bubblegum/noise/jangle/power/space pop songs. A few years ago, a friend of mine had this album, and I borrowed it for a long time and would listen to it while playing Bust A Move and The Cube. Ah, those were the days. Anyhoo, a few days ago I remembered the album and decided I should track it down, so I did. Now I'm happy.
