01/30/2003:
I had another fun day with the life skills kids. During PE we played with a giant parachute, which was a blast. Later, a speech therapist stopped by the class and worked with some of the kids. It was nice to see a professional doing her thing. I’m going back again tomorrow, and I believe we will be going bowling, which should be pretty interesting (and hectic).
I got home and worked-out and then finished watching Offret, which was super weird, but also super satisfying. Somer made some kick-ass barbecue chicken, and then I spent the rest of the night reading.

I got a haircut today. I also took a nap. Later I went to the grocery store. Then I made a new graphic for this website’s main page. Now it’s sleepy-time.

Man, McCoy Tyner is blowing my mind! He plays piano on John Coltrane’s My Favorite Things and A Love Supreme. His piano playing is what puts those albums over the top for me. It’s droney and choppy and quirky and fluid all at the same time. It doesn’t make sense.
I’m giving Frank Herbert’s Dune another chance. The last time I tried to read it, I found it really annoying, but this time I’m not having any problems. I even remember the specific things that annoyed me, and this time they don’t. Go figure.

I subbed for a life skills class today. It was a lot of fun. It’s nice not worrying about taking attendance and making students work on busy work. I just hung out and helped them when I could. I think one kid had a sinus infection, ‘cause green toxic waste was dripping out of his nose all day. During lunch I had to help him blow his nose, which I thought would totally gross me out, but it was no big deal. I also helped a girl eat her breakfast. Again I thought it would be awkward, but it wasn’t. Maybe next time I’ll work up the nerve to change some diapers.
In the evening Andy came all the way down from the Metroplex to pick up some Talby tapes. He also dropped off his new comic collection and his new solo album. They should be entertaining.
01/16/2003:
I’ve been exploring the Homestar Runner website. I especially love the Strong-Bad e-mail cartoons! They crack me up.
01/15/2003:
Last night I hung out with my ex-girlfriend that inspired these cartoons:
cartoon 1,
cartoon 2 and
cartoon 3.
It turns out that she did read them, and they pissed her off. I thought it would be awkward, but it wasn’t. Luckily, we both got over being pissed off.
01/09/2003:
Man! I haven’t worked all week! It’s no good! What’s the deal? I need some work! Oh well...
I tried to draw a comic last night, but I couldn’t think of anything, so I gave up. Maybe I should do another teaching story.
I’m still trying to finish Jack Kerouac’s On the Road. Whenever the character, Dean, is talking, to me it sounds like Kerouac is making fun of the way beatniks talk, but Kerouac was a beatnik, so I guess he thought it was cool. It sounds stupid to me, though. Stupid, stupid hippies!
01/07/2003:
There were no jobs today and tomorrow doesn’t look good. Oh well, I guess that means another day of leisure. Boo-hoo, poor me.
01/04/2003:
I think I have a cold. It sucks.
01/02/2003:
Well, I had a lot of fun during the winter holiday. I spent Christmas at my mom’s in San Antonio. Somer came along, so it was our first Christmas together. She seemed to enjoy herself, and why wouldn’t she with my mom showering her with Christmas cheer and gifts. I got a bunch of CDs and books and clothes. It’s funny, ‘cause when I was a kid I hated getting clothes, but now I love it.
Christmas night Somer and I head out to go back to Austin, but her car got a flat tire. I changed it, but then the spare-tire when flat, too. She had it towed to a shop, and we spent another night at my mom’s place. It was a shitty end to an awesome Christmas day, but we got to spend another day at my mom’s, which was nice.
We stayed in Austin for a few days, ‘cause Somer had to go to work, and then we headed up to the Metroplex in order to visit Somer’s family and my father. We got in late Saturday night, and ended up watching Pumpkin, which gets a B for effort, but was pretty crappy. On Sunday we hung-out with my dad and then with Somer’s aunt. On Monday, Somer and I spent the whole day painting cartoony sea-creatures on her sister’s nursery’s walls. We put up a big, purple octopus and a whale and some fish and other underwater pests. I was worried that it would turn out horribly, but it actually looked really well done. I was impressed. We stuck around for New Year’s celebration, which we spent babysitting Somer’s niece. Overall, it was a good time.
Now we’re back in Austin, and I still have a few days left before school starts again. I’m going to try to use this time to find a car, but I don’t like doing it. I’m afraid that I’m going to screw this up. It’s such a big investment. Yuck!
