05/31/2004:
June will be here in a few minutes. It will be my last month in my current house. It will be my second to last month living with Somer (for two years, at least). It will be my last month living in a house (I’m moving into an apartment). It will be my second to last month living on teacher assistant wages. It will be my last month of going to the South Congress HEB (aka the ghetto HEB). It will be my last month to have a music room. It will be the last month or second to last month of so many things I’m forgetting right now.
I wrote my first real lesson plan today. I used the TEKS and everything. I’m wondering if it’s any good. I won’t know until I get to try it out with my students in the fall.
05/29/2004:
I made it through the school year. My time as a teacher assistant is over, and my time as a special education teacher has begun (I signed my one-year contract on Tuesday). It’s intimidating, but exciting, too. I was told on Thursday that I’d have two ARD’s to do before school even starts in August. Running an ARD is the thing I’m most worried about, because parents, teachers, administrators, therapists, etc., are all there and will be looking at me to run the meeting and coordinate the creation or maintenance of the student’s goals and objectives. I guess it will be good to get two out of the way right off the bat, so I won’t have to worry about it anymore.
I’ll also be moving in late June to a place that is much closer to where I work and the Region XIII building where I take classes. So hopefully I won’t be spending an hour or two in my car every weekday just getting to and from work. This will also be my first place to myself, since Somer is moving to Fort Worth in July to go to Nursing school. I’ve never lived all by myself in my entire life, and I haven’t even had my own room, since I moved to Austin in 1995. I will miss Somer, but this should be an interesting learning experience.
05/15/2004:
I passed my TExES exam, so now I'm highly qualified to teach in Texas.
05/08/2004:
I had kind of a shitty week. My allergies have been killing me, since last Saturday or Sunday. I finally had to go to the doctor on Thursday, and now I’m taking an antihistamine in addition to all the other stuff I’m already taking. I’m feeling a little better today, but not much. The worst part is that I’ve lost my voice, which makes it really hard to work with my students, ‘cause it hurts to say anything. I’m going to be pretty worthless during band practice tomorrow.
04/29/2004:
I got a job as a teacher for the next school year. Kick ass!
04/16/2004:
I’ve been pretty busy the past few weeks. My classes aren’t hard, but they are time-consuming. I’m still managing to fit in some leisure activities, so I can’t complain. Tomorrow I’m going to take the Special Education TExES exam, which will determine whether or not I’m fit to teach children in Texas. I’m not cramming, and I’m not nervous, but it is a five hour test, so I’m not thrilled to be taking it either. I’m also worried that my success on my practice tests has given me a false sense of security.
03/28/2004:
Well, I made it through the week. I had an online class and my face-to-face classes started, so I was a little stressed here and there. Now, my online classes are over, so now I can just concentrate on the face-to-face classes.
03/17/2004:
I shaved my head today.
03/05/2004:
I had another busy week. I just finished my third online class today. Three down, two to go. I also observed a high school life skills class on Tuesday. The teachers and students were very nice, and it was really interesting to see how another class is run. I’ve got two observations lined up for next week, and I still need to schedule another one, so I’m going to be even busier this next week.
