05/29/2003:
Well, today was the last day of school, so I’m going to get a little break from the kids, but I’ve still got to go up to the school tomorrow to finish putting supplies away for the summer and go through the final checkout routine. I hope it doesn’t take all day.
I’ll probably take next week off, but I’ll hopefully have a summer job by the following week.
I watched the last Robert Altman movie that I can find at the video store, so I’m moving on to Luis Buñuel. Dr. T & the Women seemed kind of anti-women, although I doubt that was Altman’s intention. I’m interested to hear what he has to say on the DVD commentary.
05/27/2003:
On Friday I hung out with an old high school buddy, Susan. We went out to eat and then rented John Waters’ Female Trouble, which was really weird and crude, but I think we both enjoyed it. Saturday morning-ish we got breakfast tacos and then hiked around Zilker Park for awhile. After we cleaned up and I packed, she gave me a ride up to the Metroplex. We went over to Somer’s sister’s house and played with the baby and ate dinner, and then Susan left for her mom’s place. On Sunday I went over to my dad’s house, and he and Kathy took me out for breakfast. Then we hung out at the house and talked, and I took a shower. I headed over to Somer’s sister’s place, and once I got there we headed over to Somer’s aunt’s house for a pool party. After a few hours, Somer and I head over to my dad’s with the baby, so my dad and Kathy could meet her. They got a big kick out of Savannah. Then on Monday I went to a barbecue at my dad’s and then a barbecue at Somer’s sister’s and then Somer and I headed back to Austin. It was a long, fun weekend (and I ate a lot of greasy food).
Today I started my last substitute teaching job for this school year. I’m still in the homemaking class Tuesday through Thursday. Today went surprisingly well, but it was kind of boring, but boring is way better than horrible, so I’m happy.

I’m filling in for a homemaking teacher all this week. I’m not really enjoying it. I think I’ve sent more students to the office over the past two weeks than I had the previous two years combined. It’s kind of depressing. I wish I knew how to get through to those kids. I guess some of them are failing and have no hope of salvaging their grades, so they’ve given up. What am I supposed to do?
After sitting through a short stream of mediocre Robert Altman films from the mid- to late-80s, I’m now getting to his 90s work and it’s pretty good. Vincent and Theo and Short Cuts were almost as good as any of his acclaimed 70s films. I even enjoyed Pret-A-Porter, which got slammed by the critics, if I’m remembering correctly. It was a little shallow and silly, but maybe that was the point.

The science class was pretty rough at times. The project they had to do was pretty challenging, and quite a few of the students didn’t think they could do it, so it was up to me to show them that they could. I had some failures, but I also had some successes, so I guess it was good that I was there.
Yesterday Somer, two of her friends and I went to Enchanted Rock. We climbed to the top, which was a lot of work, but it was worth it, ‘cause it was an amazing view. After we ate our lunch, we explored some of the crevasses and rock formations and then climbed back down and headed home.
Today Somer and I went to the grocery store and then did some laundry.
05/12/2003:
I’m subbing for a science teacher all week. I’ll be teaching the students about the various body systems, such as the respiratory system, the excretory system, etc. I need to teach a lot of information that’s not in the students’ textbooks, so I had Somer give me a crash course in human anatomy. I’m lucky she has a degree in biology.
05/10/2003:
Man, Miriam Hopkins is hot!
05/08/2003:
I had a long day at work (and I forgot my lunch). When Somer got home from work, we got sno-cones and walked around the park. Then I watched a bad Fritz Lang movie.
05/06/2003:
I spent most of the evening filling out an application to be a special education teacher assistant. I think it will be a good job to have while I’m getting my certification. It’s weird being a grown up.
I also watched Robert Altman’s Secret Honor. It’s another one of his 1980s play adaptations. It was pretty good, which is a surprise, since his movies are usually much better when he doesn’t try to stay faithful to the original text.
05/05/2003:

Over the weekend I finally got to meet Somer’s new niece, Savannah. She’s super cute, which should be no surprise, since she is a baby. I even got to feed her with a bottle a few times. I tried to change her diaper, but it was too messy, so Somer had to take over.
05/01/2003:
There’s less than a month until school gets out, and I still haven’t gotten a summer job.
