SEPTEMBER AND OCTOBER'S JOURNAL

What should I write about?

10/31/2000:
I’m listening to From Genesis to Revelation, the first album by Genesis. “A Winter’s Tale” is exploding out of the boom box speakers. What happened to Peter Gabriel’s energy? I never got past Peter Gabriel 4 (aka Security), ‘cause all the songs lack the frenzy I expect from him...although “Sledgehammer,” “Big Time” and “Steam” are pretty frantic songs, so I should check those albums out someday.
Where the hell are my King-Cat Comix?

10/30/2000:
Well, I did something besides watch TV during the weekend:

before haircut
Before haircut
after haircut
After haircut

I also tidied up my room. I brought home five boxes of books from my dad’s and I had to make space for ‘em. Because of all my musical equipment, space is pretty scarce in the bedroom. I managed to get about half the books on shelves, but the rest remain on the floor.
I also made time to watch a few movies. Once Upon a Time in America was really disturbing. Noodles (Robert DeNiro’s character) was a fucked up guy. There is a rape scene that was especially disturbing. After that, The Adventures of Robin Hood was a nice change of pace. The colors were so bright! More specifically, the men’s tights were so bright! To top it off, I watched Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?. I had to take a break in the middle, ‘cause it was so intense.
On the book front, I gave up on Because It Is Bitter, Because It Is My Heart for the second time and started Rabbit at Rest. It’s nice returning to the Rabbit characters (they’re like old friends to me now). I can’t wait to see what John Updike has cooked up. The last installment of the Rabbit series comes out sometime in November, so I plan to finish Rabbit at Rest quickly, so I can pick up the new one right away.

10/27/2000:
I'm a TV junkie again. Darn it!

10/19/2000:
I’m going to Arlington for the weekend. Hopefully I’ll get to see all my friends and family, plus Somer’s friends and family.
I plan to record some Quetalby stuff with Andy. It will be the first session recorded outside of my house in Austin, so maybe there will be a fresh new vibe.

10/16/2000:
The cable modem is nice.
So far I haven’t watched an embarrassing amount of tv.
I got six issues of SuperMonster in the mail today. Wow! I’m having a tough time deciding what I like more: King-Cat or SuperMonster. I’ve only read one issue of King-Cat, so I guess the jury is out until my big order arrives.
I just found out that my sister will be at my mom’s for Thanksgiving. That means my whole family (minus my dad) will be there. Awesome! Too bad Somer will be in Bedford with her family.

10/14/2000:
Somer and I got cable tv today. Will I become a television addict again? I just finished watching Pop Gear on AMC. What a great movie! Now there’s a film on about 60s dances. Sometimes I get so jealous of teenagers who lived in the 60s.

10/13/2000:
I’ve been stuck at the reception desk a lot this week and I hate it, but I usually draw some funny doodles.

10/12/2000:
Shoot! I just realized that I forgot to record a solo album last weekend. Darn it! Oh well, at least I did put some posters up in my office.
I read Tom Hart’s The Sands and James Kochalka’s Tiny Bubbles and Magic Boy and Girlfriend. All three were awesome, especially Tiny Bubbles. It was the first Kochalka book I ever read and I finally got around to getting my own copy.
I also watched On the Waterfront and now see what all the fuss over Brando is about.
Oh yeah! I finally got the Beatles’ Past Masters Volume One. I’ve been missing out for so long! I’d never heard about a third of the songs. "Thank You Girl" and "Yes It Is" are awesome.

10/09/00:
Another weekend's gone bye-bye. Work's been strange lately. The building is too quiet; too sterile. I should put some posters on my office walls. That's a good idea. I'll put them in my bag right now!

10/06/00:
I got a package of great micro-comix from Caesar Meadows yesterday. I can't express how happy they made me. I had a smile on my face all night long. I also watched Unforgiven. Man, that film is intense! It’s so powerful, especially if you’ve seen the Eastwood movies directed by Sergio Leone, Per un Pugno di Dollari, Per Qualche Dollaro in Piu, and Il Buono, il Brutto, il Cattivo. All this stuff makes me want to create!

10/05/00:
It’s been a stressful day at work so far. I realized that I forgot to do something very important last week, so I may end up in trouble soon.
I’m planning to record my own solo album this weekend in the same mode Andy recorded his. I’ll just hit the record button and play for 45 minutes. Then do overdubs using the same method. It should at least be interesting.
I had a strange dream yesterday while napping: I find some antique condoms outside my childhood home and decide to flush them down the toilet, I watch a hilarious episode of Saturday Night Live while the toilet explodes, my parents are watching the same program in their bedroom and decide to make out, they roll into the living room and discover the mess I’ve made and are not happy about it.

10/04/00:
I’m trying to take it slow and easy today. I’m trying to enjoy the day, but getting bored. Reread King-Cat #57 and I’m jealous. I also read three issues of Double Cross; I’m not as jealous, but still jealous. I’ve got some work to do.

10/02/00:
I saw Yo La Tengo Friday night. What an awesome show!
Saturday and Sunday I helped Andy record a solo album. It's some weird stuff.
Somer tells me some mini-comics came in the mail for me, so I've got some goodies waiting for me when I get home from work. Yay!

09/28/00:
I finished watching Das Boot last night. I can't believe it was a German television mini-series originally. Why isn’t there anything that ambitious on American television? Or is there? I’m reminded of Lars von Trier’s Danish mini-series, Riget. I guess America had Twin Peaks.
I’m looking forward to seeing Yo La Tengo tomorrow night.

09/26/2000:
I’d hoped that this would be a daily journal, but so far I’m failing. I don’t know what to write about. I’ve had lots of big plans lately—such as drawing a new comic book, recording a lowfeeder album, and buying a CD burner. I haven’t done any of these things. Why? Am I creatively blocked? I haven’t written any cohesive songs in over a year. I’ve got lots of little pieces of music here and there, but I haven’t sat down and worked at it. The same goes for the comic. I’ve got a great idea, but I haven’t written a script or at least an outline.
One thing that has turned out to be a success for me is my List of 120 Movies to Rent. So far I’ve seen about 45 of ‘em. Is this really something to be proud of? I try not to veg’ out when I watch these movies, but I’d be more impressed with myself if I’d read 45 books in the past few months. I hate it when people act like books are more important than movies, but I guess deep down I must feel the same way...at least at an irrational level.

09/20/2000:
I’m trying to get back in touch with some old friends. Josh, Dominique and Susan, send me an email or pick up a phone or write a letter. Let me know what’s up.
An idea for a comic is brewing in my brain. It will probably be pretty long...40 or 50 pages at least. I don’t know if I can do it.
